Forbes have recently released and updated their World's Billionaires list. The top 10 in the 2011 shows an increase in fortune in almost all of those who were previously at the same spot in the 2010 list. But who really gained and who's fortune declined?
Carlos Slim Helu |
At the top of the pack we still see Mexican business tycoon Carlos Slim Helu with net worth of $74 billion. Remember that last year he's fortune was at $53.5 billion which means he grabbed an additional $20.5 billion. That increase is actually the biggest than any other billionaire in the list. This man is in a world of his own.
"A 19% rise in the Mexican stock market, a stronger peso, and successful mining and real estate spinoffs from conglomerate Grupo Carso all contributed to the astonishing increase."
Aside from those facts, the tycoon also merged his fixed-line telecom company into American Movil which is Latin America's largest wireless network provider. Carlos is way ahead of his nearest rival, Bill Gates (No. 2) and Warren Buffet (No. 3) with a net worth difference from Bill Gates at $18 billion.
William Gates III |
Microsoft founder and the Co-Chairman of the world's most influential foundation, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, sits on 2nd place on the list. William Gates III is right behind Carlos with a net worth of $56 billion, the world's top philanthropist, gained a modest $3 billion on top of his wealth. Despite the fact that he focused more on his philanthropy than gaining more wealth, Bill Gates still holds the title as the US' richest person.
Warren Buffet |
Warren Buffet, who does not know him? His not only rich he's famous! Like Bill, Warren added a modest $3 billion to his fortune. He is the man behind Berkshire Hathaway, a conglomerate that manages and operates subsidiary companies.
The 2011 list broke two records, one is that this list consists of more listees than any other list Forbes released. The total number of billionaires the list contains is at 1,210. The second record is when we combine all of the billionaires' net worth that would sum up to $4.5 trillion, which surpasses the gross domestic product (GDP) of Germany and way above that of the Philippines' national budget.
